ORIGIN
The TRAILSTIX originated a few years ago as a low-inpact technique to target mature bucks. I found this to be extremely effective as opposed to rattling and grunting at these older-aged class animals. By observing them during the late pre-rut and rut, I realized, that for the most part, older-aged class bucks (4 1/2 yrs. and up) are very dilligent in what they do. I've yet to witness mature bucks going bonkers and running around without any regard to wind direction or time of day. Big bucks don't come running to your feet everytime you hit the horns or your monster buck call. Not even here in southern Iowa. It just doesn't happen that way. That's a huge misconception that occurs when you watch alot of hunting videos or read lots of deer magazines. Not to say that it never happens, it just doesn't happen very often. I've personally witnessed several bucks engaged in battle but never a buck surpassing 140". I find that to be surprising when you see 170" plus bucks take charge of an alfalfa field in August. I know that the territorial and dominance aspect is present but once the rut kicks in, it seems the will to breed takes over. In order to truly analyze something, you must see it repeated over and over and find the overwhelming data to base judement on. The vast majority of mature buck sightings I've witnessed during the month of November have been while he was trailing a doe or does, or while he was cruising with his nose on a trail or a field edge seeking a doe. That is what I base my own hunting tactics around, and that was the basis behind the TRAILSTIX.
